ANNOUNCING… Mediation Mastery Book Club

9 November 2006

Mediators and ADR professionals:

I am excited to announce that I’m starting an on-line book club.  We will start off low tech and evolve as our on-line community grows.

What is it?

An on-line forum for mediators and conflict managers to discuss books that can expand our knowledge and skills.

I’ll recommend a book, you read it, skim it, speed read, photo read (do whatever it is you do) and then we will discuss it.  At the end of each month (or so), I’ll do a book review (and incorporate our collective insights).  It will be a wonderful collaborative project (at least in theory, you have to step up to the plate and become involved).

Why would I want to do this?

Reading is one way to improve your technical mastery and expertise.

For those of you who are familiar with the Mediation Business Mastery Model ™ I created (coming soon to a computer near you), the second quadrant of the model is “Technical Mastery.”  It’s all about becoming a master mediator.  Earl Nightingale said you can become a leader in your field by reading one hour a day — incorporate this habit and in a few short years you will be a local, national and potentially world leader in your field.

If you want to be a truly masterful mediator you must commit yourself to ongoing education and training.  Reading great books that expand your knowledge base and potentially your skill set, can play an important role in this process.

When you become a mediation process expert and position yourself as an expert in your niche, you will create the conditions for business success.  There’s more to it, but these elements are key.

GET GOOD and have a philosophy of “continuous improvement.”

Ok, you get the idea?  Plus, I love the idea (as I was reading today in the gen X and Y space) of our international mediation community connecting on-line around our shared knowledge, passion and interests.

So, with all that said….

I am pleased to announce that the first book we will go through in the Mediation Mastery Book Club is:

(hot off the presses, the just released) Workplaces That Work by Blaine Donais

Go get a copy and we can begin our conversation.  Have you already read it?  Post your thoughts, insights, impressions etc.  For more information, check out Blaine’s new blog.

Why did I choose this book?

1) I had the privilege of meeting Blaine at the recent ACR conference in Philly (Blaine’s a nice guy and I heard his seminar was good from another attendee);

2) Workplace consulting/training is an excellent area for mediators to expand the scope of their conflict resolution services within a narrow niche;

3) Blaine’s work is original!  He has devised the “Donais Fairness Theory” and has created assessments: Testing Instruments for Fairness Systems (TIFFS) and the Fairness Cost Analysis Tool (FCAT) (and what I’ve read so far is really good); and

4) I promised to review the book and so the book club will make me accountable to do that in a timely fashion!

Dina and Victoria, I expect you to join the party and all the rest of you too!

Click on the link above to order the book (It’s a Canadian law book) — and no I don’t get paid for my endorsement.

Do your speed reading thing and then let’s chat!

Commit yourself to becoming a master mediator today!

NEVER GIVE UP!

Kristina

p.s. if you don’t deal at all with workplace mediation, conflict management or employment/labor issues, and feel this topic is not relevant to your niche, just wait, we’ll have a wide variety of books from multiple disciplines (I’m an enneagram 7 what can I say?).

p.p.s. if you’re serious about taking your practice to the next level go to www.mediationmarketingsecrets.com today or get my free report at www.mediationmarketingtips.com.

p.p.p.s. if you’d like to recommend a book for discussion, post it here.
