The gateway to freedom

6 November 2007

Ah yes, freedom…
Doesn’t that word inspire positive thoughts?

Perhaps it’s because we are indoctrinated (those of us in the US) through our history and guiding fictions that we live in the “home of the brave and the land of the free.” We pay dearly for our “freedom.”

Today, I’m not talking about national or political freedom, I’m talking about freedom on the personal, micro, individual scale.

Is freedom something you long for?

In what way?

Financial freedom? Freedom from worry or anxiety?

Freedom from strife?

What drew you to the field of mediation or conflict management?

Since in this blog we focus on building a thriving and successful mediation or ADR practice, perhaps, you long for freedom that comes from a steady stream of clients?

In one of life’s paradoxes, freedom is a by product of discipline and adherence to certain principles.

Think of a round wheel and you divide your life into the various component parts that matter to you. Perhaps:
1) Profession/Business
2) Relationships
3) Finances
4) Health and Fitness
5) Spirituality
6) FUN
7) Contribution/giving

you get the idea.

If you want freedom in your health and fitness, you must take care of your body. Eat healthy, in moderation, get regular exercise, manage your stress and negative emotions, think right. It is through discipline that you can be free from sickness.

Some sickness might still come to you, but there is much that is within your power.

If you want freedom in your business or profession, then you must discipline yourself to do what it takes to succeed. Get in early, spend time on marketing and business development, be consistent and persistent, learn from the experts that have gone before you.

Freedom from strife in your relationships, or freedom to be happy and joyful and fulfilled requires that you spend time with your loved ones and work through issues.

You get the idea?

In what areas in your wheel of life do you need to apply greater discipline and determination? Spend more time and energy?

True freedom comes through discipline and sometimes requires a battle to be won.

Ford Harding suggests not letting a day go by without doing something to further your business development efforts.

Need to design a workshop? A piece of educational marketing? Follow up on phone calls and referrals? Update your website? Start a blog?

Pigheaded discipline and determination is what Chet Holmes calls it.

Whatever you call it, it’s the gateway to freedom. Freedom to live your life on purpose, consistent with your vision, mission and calling. Life’s too short not to live on purpose.

NEVER GIVE UP!
